The genetics of attention and intelligence

Researcher: Ms J.C. (Tinca) Polderman

In this research we have looked at the genetics of attention and attention deficits. By using twins as a research group we were able to estimate the importance of genetic and environmental influences on problem behavior. In a group of 12 year old twins we have collected behavior questionnaires. The Child Behavior Check List is a list about the frequency of problem behavior filled in by the parents. A similar list exists for teachers, the Teacher Report Form. The children also filled in a Youth Self Report. Because attention and attentional problem behavior is the main subject of this study the children have got an IQ test and neuro-psychological tests. These tests measured concentration, attention, memory and information processing. At the age of 5 the twins have done the same tests and an IQ test. By comparing the results of  7 years ago with the results of the present study we could get a clear view on the development of attention, attentional problems and intelligence in these children.

Ms Polderman started her research in December 2001. From May 2002 till December 2003 she has been collecting data. The project has been concluded at the end of 2006.
